Thatcham Writers are a group of budding novelists from Thatcham, Newbury, Reading and the surrounding area, who meet in a local pub on a monthly basis for brainstorming sessions and a few drinks. Or should that be lots of drinks and bit of banter? We have been meeting since November 2001 and are a very enthusiastic, mixed bunch, with multifarious ideas and imaginations.
We have had talks by authors and run an annual short story competition in association with the Thatcham Town Council, for the Thatcham Festival of Arts and Leisure, held in October. But, our main (and favourite) activity is collaborative story writing. By working together, we have completed two novels, written another one that still needs editing and drafted a radio play set in a prison. We have tried several different approaches, from writing the story from our own characters point of view, swapping characters, or developing separate stories which have met and interlocked in the final chapter.
Sometimes we just write a chunk of the story from whatever perspective appeals and send it on to the next person. Importantly, we don’t take ourselves too seriously. To be a Thatcham Writer, you need to have a great sense of humour, a broad minded attitude to life, and a willingness to try things out and see what happens.
