The Fairground by Anita Loughrey

Laughter and screams

Fairy light beams

Images blur

Flickering stream of light

The Waltzer spins

As colour gyrates

To the mayhem of sound.

Sparks spray

Wires skim the chequered array

Dodgems crash

Carriages thud

Around the circuit

The cars trudge

Past the bedlam of faces.

Generators churning

Slowly turning

The big wheel climbs

To dizzy heights

Snuggling couples

View the sights

A commotion of intertwined places.

Toffee apples crunch

Flocks of children bunch

Flecks of candyfloss

Stuck in their hair

Singing and shouting

Without a care

In the chaos of the fairground.

    The Fairground by Di Lawton

The sun was shining brightly

As the children walked the path

They skipped along excitedly

You could hear their joyful laugh

The many lights were flashing

The red, the green, the blue

The dodgem cars were crashing

You could see the burning hue

The little girl with pigtails

The boy with freckled face

She watched the trains on rickety rails

He ran a hurried pace

They each had pocket money

To spend on what they liked

They kissed and hugged their mummy

As they rode the magic bike

The roller coaster over head

The music loud and jolly

They won a fluffy cuddle ted

Then had a nice ice-lolly

 They queued for the tombola

The hoops were aimed and thrown

Hoorah they got one over

A goldfish to take home

The candy floss was sticky

The ice cream cold and soft

The hot dog van looked dodgy

So sweeties they did scoff

The sun was setting in the trees

Their feet they felt like lead

Almost dropping to their knees

They went off home to bed

The funfair by Geoff Rush

He travelled alone to the funfair

His instincts honed sharp as a knife

He could always rely on the funfair

To provide for his mission in life

He spotted his prey at the funfair

She was standing apart from the rest

He liked what he saw at the funfair

It reminded him what he did best

He chatted her up at the funfair

A seduction scene straight out the book

She fell for his line at the funfair

Took the bait and swallowed the hook

They left hand in hand from the funfair

She was dreaming of love and romance

If only she’d sussed at the funfair

That she was his victim of chance

He drove home alone from the funfair

Adrenalin flooding his brain

And nobody knew at the funfair

That soon he would do it again
